Therapy

THERAPY FOR ME IS…

Through our posts, we’ve been talking about how it is okay to seek help and how seeking help is a sign of strength, not of weakness.

We understand that even then, when you do decide to go in for counseling, you might have some doubts or apprehensions-

“What really is counseling?”

“What happens in these sessions?”

“Will it actually help?”

These are real questions and a lot of people we interact with do voice them as well. So, we decided that real questions deserve real answers; we asked some of those who have been in therapy with us, to share what therapy or counseling means to them.

Mental Health - Attention and Introspection

WORLD MENTAL HEALTH WEEK 2013 IS HERE!

To all of you who have been reading what we share, and to those who have stumbled upon our website more recently – World Mental Health Week is here!

We’ve always been excited about this week… more so because we hold mental health very close to our hearts. So over 2011 and 2012, we have been posting something special for all of you throughout this week..and the tradition continues this year as well.

Before we share what we are up to for Mental Health Week 2013, we want to ask you – what does mental health mean to you?

inner self

TO THAT WHICH IS BEAUTIFUL IN YOU

You are able to live with yourself because you know you are fundamentally good!

You know that all your inadequacies and the not so good qualities exist either because they are judged that way by people around you or because you picked them up somewhere on the way because of the difficulties that life sent your way.

You are correct! The deepest core of you, of all of us, every person is beautiful.

finding the middle road to mental health

FINDING THE MIDDLE ROAD TO MENTAL HEALTH

“Maybe you could try to get something done by this week”,

“Maybe you’re trying too hard, you could do with a little bit of letting go”

“There may be a lot more options you haven’t explored”

“It would help if you would stop exploring more and more options and instead focus on one”

“Maybe you could reach out to your partner more”,

“Maybe you could detach a bit from your partner and work with yourself instead!”

Yes I’m quoting myself! What in the world am I trying to do contradicting myself all over???

You’ll soon know!

Rise in teenage suicide in India

UNDERSTAND TEENAGE SUICIDE: GET INTO THEIR SHOES

A classmate of mine in school and college successfully hung herself from a fan… It was devastating… Years later here I am-a psychologist- with several hundred sessions of having heard the teenagers side of the story-the hopelessness, helplessness and the frustrations. When Rediff asked me to write about teenage suicide, everything came together 🙂

Aggression

UNDERSTANDING AGGRESSIVE CHILDREN : THE VICTIM BEHIND THE AGGRESSOR

Those of us who have children who are irritable and easily angered probably wonder why they are so short-tempered, why they snap back for everything we say and just WHY they are so aggressive. Most of the reasons we manage to think about center around stubbornness, immaturity, peer pressure, deriving pleasure out of rebellion and an irresponsible approach to life. Naturally, our approach towards correcting such behaviors stem from these reasons. We chide our children, give them repeated instructions and make repeated attempts to get them to obey and conform. However, if you have noticed, these may not have worked. You may see that your child still continues to defy and disobey. In fact, most of you may notice that the more you try to correct your child, the more defiant and oppositional your child becomes.

Freedom

EMOTIONAL FREEDOM TECHNIQUES [EFT]

I was introduced to Emotional Freedom Techniques [EFT] as part of my course in Integrated Clinical Hypnotherapy and have been fascinated with it ever since. Further training in the AAMET certified advanced EFT helped in revealing multiple effective ways of application. It’s a simple technique which effectively heals everything from negativity, stress, anxiety, depression, trauma, fears, addictions and cravings to aches and pains among many others. This technique is being effectively applied world-wide and is now beginning to create an impact in India as well.

why do we get anxious

WHY DO WE GET ANXIOUS?

Anxiety – that uncomfortable feeling in the pit of your stomach, making you uneasy and jittery.. what causes that? Why do we get anxious?

A good chunk of the answer to this lies in our thought processes. We often have recurrent patterns of thought that cause, contribute to or maintain anxiety. Some such thoughts are described in this blog.

What is anxiety

WHAT IS ANXIETY?

Anxiety can be described as a state where one experiences symptoms that are bodily, emotional, behavioural and cognitive (involving thought and mental processes). Tension, worry, nervousness and apprehension are some of the words commonly used to describe anxiety.

We have all experienced anxiety, be it in the form of nervousness before going up on stage, tension for exam, apprehension about a decision, worry for our kids or stress for an office presentation. Anxiety can range from being mildly discomforting to severely debilitating and if not dealt with properly can manifest as disorders that negatively affect your daily lives.

Forgiveness

FORGIVENESS

Forgiveness is often seen and dismissed as a virtue of the saintly. Most people cling dearly to their anger, pain and sense of injustice. The choice of not forgiving might temporarily give you a sense of power – power to condemn, power to judge and hold the other person guilty, power of righteously being holier than thou. However, going one level deeper, one sees just how hollow and fictitious this power is. You are actually giving away your power, allowing the opposite person to push your buttons at will, to make you writhe in agony or cry in pain at a whim.
